You scan the room. Pete is avoiding your gaze. The rug is slightly pushed up. The flowers in the window box are pointing away from the sun. Mark is picking his nose. Rachel is rubbing something brown off her hands with a paper towel and saying "Ew, I bumped into the cake!"

Ok.. Rachel took the ring and headed for window, tripped over the rug when pete got a bit familiar and stuck her hand in the window box to stop herself falling over. She lifted out the flowerpots, put the ring underneath, but put the pots back the wrong way round.

A man lives on the 20th floor of a block of flats. When he goes out he gets in the lift and goes to the ground floor. When he gets back he gets in the lift, goes to the 16th floor and climbs the stairs for the rest of the way.
When its raining he gets in the lift on the 20th, and gets out on the ground floor, but coming back he gets in the lift and goes straight to the 20th floor... Y?

Almost. Rachel took the ring, stumbled over the rug, put the ring in under the soil-thing, got her hands dirty and put the flower in backwards. Everybody else's behaviour was just a red herring.

Some interesting guesses, but I would say when she goes out boots are much preferred (over shoes) and mittens over gloves. It's chilly of course, which is a wonderful temperature. Much better than warm, though a breezy day in summer may be considered.
