This thread is for the giveaway contest for the Spaceship Handbook. I have all the details on my blog (http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2007/11/27/ba-giveaway-number-5/). For a chance to win, just post (only once, please) in this thread! On Monday December 3rd at noon (Mountain time) I'll pick a random post number, and that person wins the book!

[insert witty comment about rockets and wanting this book here]

The_Radiation_Specialist
2007-Nov-28, 06:59 AM
Be sure to use a true random number generator rather than a pseudo random. A truly random sequence of numbers has not only a flat distribution of the frequency that each number appears, it also has a flat distribution for the next number when you look at what follows a particular number. It also has a random distribution for the next number if you consider what follows any pair of numbers. And so on. There's just no correlations at all. But this has to also hold when you consider the first number-- that should be random too. Having said that I may suggest a really good random number like 71.

Suddenly a beautiful female humanoid appears named Losira (Lee Meriwether) and she says: "I am sent for the book." But before she can grab it, you pull it back from the desk. She suddenly jumps back, freezes into a still image and then seems to fold into a black line that then shrinks to a point and vanishes, all the while a strange sound is heard accompanied by a womans voice singing a spooky ascending chromatically melody: "Ahhhh-ahhh-ahhhh"

Reflecting on all this while looking through the book, you say: "That was cool."

A few minutes later a robed figure with a dark hood obscuring the face in shadow enters the room. The robed figure holds a crude metallic hallow tube which he slowly points toward the book and he says in a low, amplified voice: "You give the book to Landrew."

(And its not even Halloween.)

Since I'm the ubergeek who lives in a basement and has no life, I am the one who should get the book.

Sure, it won't help me to meet women, but I can decide what ship to build when I finish my plans for universal conquest. I've even got the font selected! :)

I'm a sci-fi geek and I would really like a copy of this book because it would help take my mind off the operation my mother needs to save her life for which I am working 4 jobs to raise money while putting my kid sister with leg-braces through school.

What a great idea!! Combining fact with fiction and dreams. I want one. Already checked out Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Borders; if I don't win it. Amazon.com has them plus they have Vol 2, "The Saucer Fleet", by the same authors. That also looks like a "must have". Barnes & Noble and Borders only have Vol 2, online.

I absolutely LOVE Chesley Bonestell artwork. I lived in Huntsville, Alabama, for a few years, and the best part of the entire state is the NASA Museum at Redstone Arsenal, where they had a wonderful collection of original Bonestall works.

Much as I'd like to have this book, it would make a great birthday gift for my grandson, who turns 10 years old this week. Although he's into athletics, he is also so nerdy that he makes blueprint designs for the Lego contraptions that he builds. So, hopefully this note will prejudice the random number generator in my favor.
