AFAIK he's never had a name, he's always just "The Doctor". In cultures with no concept of a doctorate he's probably just known as "The Smart Guy". ;)

I find horses amusing. I've mentioned this to people, and they can kind of see what I'm getting at, although some have pointed out that horses are beautiful animals.
I think this point predates my own opinion, as the humorous aspect of horses was exploited in a throwaway line in the Jon Pertwee story, Frontier In Space, in 1973. Probably episode 2.
I used to be an ambivalent fan of Doctor Who. I even wrote one of the spin-off novels (The Suns of Caresh, 2002) under the pen name Paul Saint. But my qualified love for the series was pretty much crushed by the recent finale, Last of the Time Lords, which was a piece of filth.
Oh, and Jack Roach, I think the word was "BLINK", not "BLINLK". Just sayin'.

well the Doctor has used two names that I can think of one was Dr.Forester (I think) in the first Dr. Who episode and the other John Smith when he was stuck on Earth (Jon Pertwee).

Not Dr Forester. He landed in a junkyard owned by I.M. Foreman, and one of his first companions assumed that was his surname. (The Doctor had no idea what he was talking about.)
John Smith was a name he adopted during his second incarnation, that of Patrick Troughton, in the adventure The Wheel In Space. He used the name from then on, including when he was exiled to Earth during his Pertwee incarnation, and including in his Paul McGann incarnation.

I stand corrected.

Well I just rembered the first Pertwee episode when UNIT asked what name he wanted on his Id he said, "John Smith".
Sorry, it makes me laugh when people fume and froth over Doctor Who. I think the new series (Eccelstone and both the Tennant ones) have been outstanding and greatly entertaining (and moving in places). To hear some of the grognards wailing and gnashing their teeth over Catherine Tate being the new companion, you'd think someone just killed their mothers or something. Personally I think she's going to be fantastic - I just watched the last Christmas special with her in it and enjoyed it immensely and thought she was great in that.
It's a vast improvement over the older Dr Whos IMO, I can't watch most of those without cringing they were so awful. I'm sure the grogs will continue to complain very loudly about the tiniest things in the new Dr Who, but the other 8 million or so of us will continue to enjoy it regardless.

I thought John Simm was an excellent Master- funny, mad and despotic- but the script in the second episode let him down.
I was going to post a bunch of critical spoilers, but decided against it.
But the creation of a New Timelord Empire afforded the opportunity for a radical reset which followed logically from the plot, and they threw it away.
I wish I was lacking in critical faculties. Then I could feel superior too.
There's such a thing as being over-critical, you know. Personally I think there's more important things in the world to get one's blood pressure raised over than what's in a TV show.
Like I said, most people don't care so much - they just watch the show, enjoy it for what it is, and get entertained by it. The hardcore grognards can complain all they like about it, but ultimately they aren't the ones that matter.

I'm not a huge fan of 'Dr. Who'. But having grown up with the Tom Baker version, I naturally checked out the new one on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Eccleston and Tennant made good Doctors. Eccleston I prefer as an actor, but Tennant's version had a bit of a rock star swagger about him that was very cool.
I really liked Rose (Billie Piper), and sorely miss her. Dr. Martha (Freema Agyeman) was really growing on me at the time she left.
Personaly, I'd prefer a more grown-up 'Dr. Who', geared more for adults, and appropriately darker and less PC. Perhaps more like the 'Highlander'.

Agreed. Doesn't mean it has to be deadly serious and po-faced - just a bit better thought-out with interesting ideas, and plots that make sense - and which don't have naff endings that are so predictable you spend more time looking at the clock than at the TV screen.
It's possible to be child-friendly without being childish.

Whos looking forward to the new Dr. Who series. I heard that Rose (Billie Piper) and Dr. Martha Jones (Freeman Agyeman sp?) are coming back into it! I really disliked Rose!! But i thought Martha was the best so far!!!

I've lusted after Billie Piper for years. She's really easy on the eyes, and I loved seeing her as the Doctor's sidekick. Those big brown eyes, the curvy figure, and the oh-so-sexy accent just made me tingle in inappropriate ways.
In MY 'Dr. Who' universe, the cutesy platonic part of that affiliation would be over as soon as the Daleks, or the Cybermen, or the Centaurian Crab People were soundly defeated.
I mean, what's the use of saving the universe each week, if there aren't any fringe benefits?
