Almost 30 years ago, on May 27, 1977, the Sex Pistols released God Save the Queen. Britain was awash with celebrations for Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee. Lydon had written the lyrics in the kitchen of his Hampstead squat, originally calling the song No Future. It was a call to arms to anyone disenfranchised by class-ridden England, a place of dole queues and grim housing estates for those not sharing the dream.

It's an impolite term for the, ahem, male generative organs. In Britain it's used as a term of derision or disagreement; "Oh, ********!"
It was used in the name of the Sex Pistols' 1st album, I believe.

And in a landmark court case it was legaly defined as not causing offence to see the word in print on the album cover.
I got the Album the day it came out and played it to death!
And I am still 'Pretty Vacant' and I don't care!

Also, in some parts of the UK and Ireland and in common with many "offensive" terms, it's used as an affectionate term - as in "Good morning, you big ********".

Hum,
or as a example of showing that something is really good as in “...the new launch system is the dogs ********, Vicar”...
Quite a wholesome word now....

Image here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_Pistols)Ah!---never did understand that album title:
...the word ******** was a legitimate Old English term originally used to refer to a priest...in this context it is intended to signify 'nonsense'; the title had been unwittingly suggested by Steve Jones when, in response to bickering over possible titles, he exclaimed "Oh, never mind the ******** of it all!"... wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_Pistols#Never_Mind_the_********) (through Blob's link)

I always thought that some band should call itself "The ********" and entitle their first album (wait for it!) "Never Mind the Sex Pistols, Here Are the ********".
