View Full Version : Anti Spam software

Because of all the spamming we've been getting to the board, I've installed a plugin that tries to stop spam-like threads from being started, or posts added. Antispam software is pretty flakey stuff, so please let me know if your posts are judged unfairly, and I'll finetune the settings. Or throw it out and find some other solution.
Thanks!

If it helps, that would be great. These days, I get more reports from BAUT than any other "real" email.

No kidding. 10+ a day.

I have only had to report about 6 times, 4 of those in the last week or two.

You and the other users are really on the ball: most spams are reported inside of ten minutes, frequently by up to four people. With 6 to 12 spams a day, that's a lot of email for us moderators.

Hehe, I can imagine...Hmm, I wonder if there is a mod that decreases the report button too 1, that way once the first person reports a thread or post the feature is removed or disabled to prevent further reports.

Yeah, I'm looking for a plugin that lets the moderators remove spam, ban the IP and ban the user all with one click. Then we'll deputize some of the regular spam reporters to be able to do the same thing. That would lick the problem.

Especially if you make sure to deputise some from timezones that are not well covered by the regular moderators.
I can see a problem with indiscriminant ip banning though, since a lot of people are on from dynamic numbers and it looks like several are on from public(library etc.) pc's, both cases where an ip ban could hit innocents.
If it's a temp ban to stop multiple spams within in a short time, this objection does not apply.

IP bans are generally only handed out for repeat offenses by the same IP.

*raises hand*
It seems like it's a coordinated strike, they aways wait for there to be no moderators so using members would be genius actually.

We need an Aussie or Far Eastern moderator, that's the ticket. ;)

That was what I'd expect, which was why I reacted to the OneClick AllBan idea which seemed somewhat excessive, especially if given to a non-moderator.

Sorry - didn't realize. Well, obviously you need to be constantly on duty from about 3 to 6 am my time (Eastern US). ;)

Do we have a feeling for how well it's working. I've seen a couple of threads it should have caught but didn't, a couple of threads it did catch but shouldn't have, and a couple of threads that it should have caught and did. Success rate is rather mediocre.

Yeah, I don't like it. I'm going to uninstall it. What I really want is that one-click solution. Press one button and it bans the person, moves their threads and bans their IP. I'm going to keep looking.

And gives them a really nasty electric shock.... ;)

All we can do now is report the posts...
(the "!" in the triangle on the top right of a post...)
I think it's best to otherwise ignore them too???- moderators?

If it looks like spam, just report it and then ignore it.
All I know is that the moderators definitely kill them quickly. I just reported one that had been around for 8 minutes, and it was gone within a minute after that. Good stuff, though a reliable anti-spam software (like that's ever going to happen) would be nice.

The problem is going to get worse, with our growing popularity, but I think the best solution is to give the community more power to control it.

Must have been a coincidence?
I report quite obvious spam, and by the time I have posted some nonsense to remove that thread from the top position (which really does not take a lot of time for me to do :D ), the spam is deleted.
Anyway, nice quick job there, mods!
