So I've been using the term "crack monkey" for something like . . . oh, maybe nine years. I have no idea whence I got the term, nor am I sure that I actually got it from anywhere. I may've just created it, but I'm honestly not sure. Help?

Depends a lot on the context in which you've used it. Here's what the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Crack+Monkey) says. BTW, their sentence constructions leave something to be desired.

I think one should take exception to the allegation that "Scientists studying the effects of crack cocaine often use monkeys as the subject of their studies."
Do they know how much it costs to keep a monkey in lab, let alone feed it on cocaine?
Sorry, a cheap crack, as it were, but seriously, this is nonsense.

PS DON'T GO TO THE SITE THAT COMES UP FIRST ON A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR "CRACK MONKEY" - crackmonkey.org
I immediately got a warning from my virus checker, that was eventually able to eliminate the TRojan that was injected , I must presume from that site. J.

We don't really use it in the same sense as the urban dictionary, quite. It means "someone who does many stupid things, as someone on crack," or at least approximately that. I came across a site that referred to it as a universal insult, but no site that will tell me when/where anyone first heard it.

...how much it costs to keep a monkey in lab, let alone feed it on cocaine?...The marketing genius of providing coke in crack form is what has allowed it to become the scourge that it now is---instead of having to come up with the (approximately) $80-100 for a gram of powder, its consumers can find it for $5 and up, in proportionate crack form.
