Why is there a limit of 5 for the number of poll questions?

Surely it is not a question of memory usage.

If someone wanted to set a poll asking which team will win the world cup they couldn't and there seems to be no reason for this other than aesthetics!

You essentially have two possibilities, limited or unlimited.
If you go unlimited, it'll take 3 attoseconds for someone to come up with a poll with 2.718.281.828 possible answers.
Is you chose to limit it, then the limit needs to something that gives enough flexibility for the vast majority of polls, while not going overboard, and 5 seems to be the best compromise.
Once you have much more that 5 answers, most queries have so few answers to each answer that it becomes essentially meaningless to try to see any trend in them.
