Could loss of choral reefs lead to mass extinctions of sea life? I found this distrubing.

CNN story:

"...evidence of global warming is overwhelming." - M. James Crabbe, Professor of Biochemistry, University of Luton, England

Sorry if this was "Too Seeked" but I haven't seen a follow up yet.

I'm not a global warming skeptic, but it seems to me that something else has to be going on other than just the warming since it's been warmer than this not all that long ago (thousands of years), and it didn't affect the coral this badly.

This link (http://www.marinebiology.org/coralbleaching.htm) discusses a number of possible causes of coral bleaching. The article still is of the opinion that increased sea temperature is the most common cause of bleaching, though more study is needed.

African dust storms, rich in fungus , bacterial spores , and iron for the nutrient poor Carribean, contribute to bleaching...http://aem.asm.org/cgi/content/full/68/5/2214

Not as much as I can't find a good joke in the typo.

It comes from being a musician. I still think of "bass" as a string instrument rather than a fish, and the alphabet seems slightly foreign after "G".
