View Full Version : It's lonely at the top

Hey guys. Well, this is it, my 2001st post. I am now a PhD (again)! Whew!
Frankly, it's quite a surpise to me. I never thought I would be this active on the board. In fact, I've never really felt like I post that much, probably because I usually don't have much important to say, but it must be true since the numbers don't lie. A short post here, a quick rant there. I guess I just like participating here more than anything else.
However, even more shocking to me is the fact that I'm up here all alone (for the time being at least, HUb' should be joining me soon). I mean, since the only other Bad PhD has decided to retire his name and start over from the bottom, I somehow have become the only active member with this rank. How could this have come to be?! I just don't know. I mean, I'm not that special.
So, it's lonely at the top. C'mon guys, hurry up and join me. Although from speed at which some of you post, I'm sure you'll not only join me, but leave me in the dust as you pass me up. Kilopi especially. I'm wondering if I'll be able to reach the level of his old name before he passes me up again with his new one. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Anyway, it's sure been fun, and with all the great folks here, I'm sure it will continue to be.
Big thanks also to the Big Guy himself for letting us ramble on and on.

Congratulations! Here's some fireworks (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap030213.html). It wouldn't be so lonely if you posted in a time zone that the hoi polloi could relate to, but I'm sure that HUb' will be along soon.

David,
Thanks for the heads up on kilopi. I would have started to get worried that something happened to GoW. And congratulations. I'm just looking to graduate from Newbie. But I'm trying not to do it with fluff posts.

Yeah, I also recently missed GoW and didn't realize for some time that he is now kπ.
Maybe he should add "formerly known as GoW" to his sig...
...and one day he will change his name to "MathSymbol" /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
And here's a page for π (http://www.astro.univie.ac.at/~wasi/PI/pi_club.html)

First, you're right. Many times I don't pay attention. Also, I rarely make it over to the BBA board. Where do you guys find the time?
Second, that was a real bad week for me. When I would get courage to get on the board, I mainly looked to see if there was any new info on the Shuttle.
Third, gosh darn it, another fluff post. Well someone has to give irony a little competition.

What David is referring to is the black day about a year or so ago when the BA changed the qualifications to achieve each of the rankings. I think David, and a few others had just achieved Bad PhD and had it snatched away when Phil doubled the number of posts needed. There was some gnashing of teeth, but no permanent harm done, as David has demonstrated.
BTW congratulations, David. I guess you now have both an Honorary and a Real BAD PhD.

Yep, that's exactly what David is refering too. I myself was a Bad PhD for one glorious day, and then came the day of revocation. (The sky was so blue back then ...)

I don't know how to tell who posts the most in the shortest amount of time, but if you look at your or someone elses profile, it will tell you how many posts you do a day on average. Then you can figure it out from there.
Added: You can also look at the date someone signed up and the number of posts they have.

I remember reading that linked thread. I had just joined the board and it took me a while to figure out what people were upset about. Maybe BA can make an exception for me and keep me a Bad Newbie forever. Or until I make a meaningful post, whichever comes first.

If you do it right (!), all names take only two fingers to type. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
But in fact, as SeanF pointed out (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=3741&forum=6&29&start=6), if you really type Colt right, it takes three.

DH, how long did it take you to learn to use all those buttons? It takes what, seven fingers?

That's the beauty of it. The buttons, each and every one of them, are completely programmable. You can set them up to do just about anything you want, you can even emulate keystroke combinations or create pop-up menus of useful commands. Then just push and go.
It's surprisingly addictive. To tell the truth, a few weeks ago it went out on me, the left-right movement became erratic. I had to use my older, simpler trackball for a week until I could get it replaced (under warranty thankfully). It was then that I discovered just how used to it I've become.
