I tried this once with limited success. The other day I received 2 separate solicitations. On a lark, I forwarded the respective emails to the other sender and said- "maybe you can help each other out"...so, anyways one of them replies and says something on the order of "Dear Brother, Maybe we can help each other out. What is your real name?" Then he tells me where he is (Dubai) and he gives me a phone number...Obviously the guy had a limited knowledge of English or whatever...I'd love to be able to do a really good one on one of them...very time consuming though....also you need resources like a fake fax number, etc...

Is this one of those scams to get you to pay a huge phone bill or something? I'm not familiar with this one

419 scams, ie. Nigerian 419 scams...

"The Scam operates as follows: the target receives an unsolicited fax, email, or letter often concerning Nigeria or another African nation containing either a money laundering or other illegal proposal OR you may receive a Legal and Legitimate business proposal by normal means. Common variations on the Scam include "overinvoiced" or "double invoiced" oil or other supply and service contracts where your Bad Guys want to get the overage out of Nigeria (Classic 419); crude oil and other commodity deals (a form of Goods and Services 419); a "bequest" left you in a will (Will Scam 419); "money cleaning" where your Bad Guy has a lot of currency that needs to be "chemically cleaned" before it can be used and he needs the cost of the chemicals (Black Currency 419) ; "spoof banks" where there is supposedly money in your name already on deposit; "paying" for a purchase with a check larger than the amount required and asking for change to be advanced (Cashier's Check and Money Order 419); fake lottery 419; chat room and romance 419 (usually coupled with one of the other forms of 419); employment 419; and ordering items and commodities off "trading" and "auction" sites on the web and then cheating the seller. The variations of Advance Fee Fraud (419) are very creative and virtually endless, so do not consider the above as an all-inclusive list!"

I was on AOL a while back when I had the privilege to get an unsolicited IM from a Nigerian princess. When I got it, I started wondering how long it would take before she asked for money, and also how much time I could get her to invest before she gave up on me. I figure that the more time she spent talking to me, the less time she would be spending fleecing someone else. It took about 15 minutes. When she asked for help getting her supposedly ill-gotten gains out of the country, I told her that I would be happy to take all of the money from her, but that I needed a "good faith" deposit first before I would accept the rest of the money. That caught her by surprise, because she is the one that is supposed to ask me for a good faith deposit. Even with that, she kept trying to convince me to go along with the plan. Finally I asked her why she thought I was so dumb that I would believe her story. Even then she didnt give up, insisting that she was on the level. After that I got tired of the game, told her she was a lousy con man and not to quit her day job.

As a long standing member of www.419eater.com I'd have to say: just try it again.

In a nutshell, the "419" scams are those emails you get from Nigeria claiming to send you $25,000,000.00 yadda, yadda.

"419" is the number of the Nigerian penal code conderning (internet) fraud.

Baiting these lads, i.e. pretending to go along with their scam, can be lots of fun. But *please*, never use your own name, telephone number, etc. Despite the comedy, in the end these guys are dangerous criminals.

A visit to www.419eater.com is worth it.:)

Greetings.

I have seen quite a few of the 419 baiter-style sites. They provide a lot of laughs and some of them go to great pains to get the goat of the prospective scammers.

Regards, tbm

I love that site, especially the Church of the Holy Cow and the football one. I should add that it contains language some may find offensive.

I received one of these emails saying something like "I have $100,000000 dollars in Nigeria and am unable to get it out of the country because of the local laws" or something like that. The guy wanted me to help him move the cash and offered me a nice percentage for doing so. (Is my email address idiot@home.com?) What he realy meant to say was "Give me your bank account details so I can empty it!"
I replyed saying that since he had already admitted that he was not willing to obay the laws of his own country, why should I trust him in a multi-million dollar deal? The reply from him was ... "You are the most stupid creature I have ever met!"
It takes one to know one!

... What he realy meant to say was "Give me your bank account details so I can empty it!" ...
In most cases they don't actually do anything with your bank account information. That's just to get you hooked.

After a number of emails back and forth and your being passed over to a "barrister," they'll tell you that the money is ready to be sent, but, alas, they have to pay the bank employee a small fee, probably around $10.000. Since they can't access the account, you should forward the amount per Western Union. This can go on for a long time. Fee after fee after fee. Some victims have been known to pay $60.000 and more.

It's a very sad thing.

Some victims are persuaded to travel to Nigeria or South Africa. A number are known to have been murdered.

I Just, HAVE to Ask ...
Nope. I do what is called "straight" baiting. I.e. instead of going for the funny stuff, I try to act as much as possible like a real victim. Many of us do this.

Since they're about as interesting to read as an average telephone book, "straight" baits are rarely published.

However, if done well, "straight" baits are very effective in wasting the scammers' time and resources, therefore in part keeping the "lads" away from real victims. This is one of the main objectives of www.419eater.com (http://www.419eater.com).

One of my relatives who lives in Europe has fallen for Nigerian scammers for years before they were even well known. He has gone to Nigeria many times, has placed surreal calls to our house at odd hours of the morning, and his wife is threatening to divorce him but he STILL won't admit that he won't see a dime of it! Truly sad, as otherwise he's the nicest and most rational person ever, yet he's willing to throw away everything for this pipe dream. :(

This site

http://sweetchillisauce.com/nigeria.html

has the funniest stories of 419 scams.

The owner is an australian who had the hobby of conning nigerians. I say had because he has retired from doing it. When he was active I would go there every day to see the latest installment.

Quite right you are, but you should have read all the posts. Specially the one three posts before yours.
