On 21 Sept, on page 2 of the Guardian newspaper there were some quotes in 'Today on the Web' about NASA going back to the moon: Page 2 of digital Guardian (http://digital.guardian.co.uk/guardian/2005/09/21/pages/ber2.shtml) (click on bottom right article with photo of rocket)
including this one:
≥For all the conspiracy sites there are as many written by people who know what they are talking about. Believer "Zoisnick" attempts to convert the scientists at the Bad Astronomy and Universe Today forum, before, getting an intellectual mauling by a pack of irate astrophysicists. "Conspiracy theorists and their ilk are torn apart by rational argument," gloats m13-Higgs, retiring and licking his chops.

The funniest thing about that is m13_higgs is a teenage girl... ok maybe not as much to you all but I happen to know her in the real world and am very amused of thinking her retiring and smacking her chops! :D

Wow! This forum has been around only a couple of weeks and we're already being quoted in the papers! That's very cool. Thanks for posting this! And congrats to m13-higgs!

Yeah - I read the Guardian online every day and hadn't spotted this, nice exposure but forum may fill up with beardy, bleeding-heart liberals.
You tell 'em m13-higgs. (sorry don't know how to 'bold' your name)

I wanted to post this:
Put
and around m13-higgs, and you end with m13-higgs.
but it turns out that the "code" function isn't working properly. What you need is "[", a "b", and "]" (to start bold), and "[/", a "b", and "]" to end bold.

Hi Fram,
The "code" tag means something different in VBull-ese: it just prints the text in a fixed font.
The equivalent is [noparse], but it is not yet implemented. :)
It was asked for here. (http://www.bautforum.com/showpost.php?p=561528&postcount=3)
Edit: A workaround is the "php" tag:

I'm happy to accept the label of "irate astrophysicist"! Ok, I generally don't get involved in the "intellectual mauling," but I'm a proud member of the pack!

We're already here. Bw-ha-ha-ha!
(Actually, that's not very in character is it. How about - Bw-ha-ha-ha if that's OK with the rest of you.)

I too am honored to be described as an irate astrophysicist by the Guardian. I'll have to see if I can put this on my resume.

For all the conspiracy sites there are as many written by people who know what they are talking about.
Certainly congratulations to m13-Higgs for her media mention, and I also wouldn't mind being an irate astrophysicist (but I would have to be an astophysicist first). But my experience has been that conspiracy theorists and their ilk are completely unaffected by rational argument.

allow me to second the "I'd love to be an irate astrophysicist, were I only an astrophysicist," thing. I'm merely an acolyte of Mr. Logic, and he accepts people from all disciplines. (they don't always accept him, though, more's the pity.)

I was thinking the same thing! Next time I have to fill out a survey that asks for occupation, I'll write "Irate Astrophysicist." (What, you don't get paid to post here?)

Shush! Just don't tell anyone that you aren't, let 'em think what they want! ;)
Seriously, I'll add my congrats to m13-Higgs.

Someone thought I was an astrophysicist? COOL! And I really was irate at the time. I just heard about this article from Andromeda321, and I can't believe I said something quote-worthy.
Good publicity for the forum, though! :)

So....are we ready to start a new band? "Jay Utah and the Babbling Maggots" never got off the ground. Maybe "M-13 Higgs and the Irate Astrophysicists" will make it.

It's been 4 years. Saying that there will be new people involved is kind of a truism.
If you're a conspiracy theorist, you "smell a conspiracy" everywhere, no matter how harmless a statement is.

Perhaps there should be a BBC nature documentary on the habits and behaviours of packs of irate astrophysicists.

I think it was already done on "The Elegant Universe". *cringes*
(I'm not looking to honestly get involved in the string theory debate - it fascinates my tiny, feeble brain. I'll leave it there.)

It should be pointed out that the correct term for the people here, as anointed by Phil is a pack of weirdos (http://www.bautforum.com/bad-astronomy-books/615-new-forum-book.html#post8577). Although, as noted by (at the time) Grapes, weirdos don't travel in packs.
