View Full Version : Active X??

I'm just back at work after vacation and logging in from here for the first time. I have my browser (IE6, only option here) set to not run Active X unless I allow it. I'm getting the warning "Do you want to allow programs such as Active X and plugins to run?" on every page of the BAUT. Saying "no" doesn't seem to change anything but it's annoying to have to keep clicking it.

What's trying to run? Can we make it go away? Please??

Most likely, there's something in one of the ads Google is serving up. Might want to PM a mod about it, because ActiveX ads are not cool.

Hmm, I'll look into this & see what can be done.

It's strange that Trebuchet is getting this warning on every page, though. There shouldn't be anything that's active X that I can think of.

I think Kesh is right, it's probably the ads. I'm not sure they can be shut down :(

What's with you and opera sleepy- don't you have to pay for that one?

Opera serves up ads within the browser itself if you don't register, but you don't have to register so it's technically free.

I'm using Camino (a MacOS X specialized version of Firefox), so I'm not having this issue. Then again, I'm on a Mac, so I can't have any ActiveX issues. ;)

I'd use the Adblock plug in for Firefox. See if avoiding the Adsense ads altogether fixes the problem.

For what it's worth, my system blocks Active X, but I haven't had this problem.

(To double check, I just went to a site that always gives me ActiveX warnings, and yes, it still does.)

As I said in the OP, I'm stuck with IE at work. I use FireFox at home. I agree it's likely ad related, and I'm still seeing it every page. I can't just turn ActiveX off completely because there are unfortunately some work applications using it.

My work computer is getting "refreshed" next week and I believe we may be getting FireFox at that time, which would at least help my lunchtime browsing.

Now that I'm thinking about it, last week I was at the vacation home using IE and not getting the message. I thought I had the same security settings there as in the office but I wasn't getting the warnings.

Edited to add: Now I've got a big banner add across the top, from some IM outfit. Still says "hosted by Google" underneath. I REALLY dislike that.

Apologies, I missed that part. :o

I've tried browsing the forum in IE 6 (on XP Pro, SP2, 6.0.2900.2180) experimenting with the various Active X settings, and have been unable to produce the symptom you're encountering.

How about the banner ads? I really hate seeing that!

Could it be some form of ad/spyware on your PC? I've had them before and they tend to bombard me with active X messages. Try browsing other sites, if the exact same thing happens run spybot and ad-aware if you can.

They're pretty easy to tune out. At least they're not those garish animated flash ads that add insult to injury by assailing you with audio.

I won't be seeing them though, due to an aforementioned plug-in on a certain browser.

It's okay, install Adblock for Firebox. I encourage it. If you're the kind of person annoyed by ads, then I don't want you seeing ads.

I've used it since its inception. ;)

I can't install ANYTHING at work. But I think I'll do that at home.

I really don't object to the usual Google ads, it's these banners for some IM service that are bothering me. Is no one else getting those?

I saw only Google ads with IE. Could you post a screenshot or something?

I saw only Google ads with IE. Could you post a screenshot or something?I've had banner ads, though mine were for an ISP. Currently I've got 3 google text ads.

Edit: Spoke too soon, see attachments

Ah-ha. I had to do a whole lot of clicking to get the banner ads to come up, before was seeing text-only ads like in attachment #1, then finally got something like attachment #2.

(Oh, and a couple of beauts in #1. )

I've had that one, but not as often as a more generic IM one, perhaps the same company. This never happened on the BABB, I suspect BAUT has signed up for a different level of Google Adware which, IMHO, is excessively intrusive.

And for the record, I'm at home now and launched IE just to see if I got the ActiveX notices. And I am getting them.

If you are going to get the Adblock extension then you should also download a filter list. that way you don't have to manually block ads each new page. most are already picked up by Adblock and hidden.

Great, Sibrel's ad (moonmovie . com). I have it blocked on my website. Grrrr. In this post (http://www.bautforum.com/showpost.php?p=549747&postcount=17) I mentioned that it was the first Google ad I noticed when the ads were reactivated.

Curiously, I now notice that the screen grab of the ad has apparently had its link removed. Derivative of the blocking process?

Your URL is missing a certain domain. ;)

Your URL is missing a certain domain. ;)Fixed.

Curious though. The URL was a plain copy (from the post number icon (#17) of the referenced post) and paste. Plus my extended clipboard application shows that www.bautforum.com (http://www.bautforum.com) was part of the copied URL the first time around.

Still some peculiar things here, it would appear.

As I said in the OP, I'm stuck with IE at work.

There is a portable version of Firefox (http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/) that allows you to run with personal settings and such from a thumbdrive. Sounds like it should do the trick for you. I believe that all cookies are saved into the thumbdrive also.

That might work but it's probably a violation of the rules. I'm getting a new computer tomorrow, perhaps it'll include FireFox.

I'm REALLY getting tired of clicking "NO" on every dang page. I wish the Admins could do something about this, BABB did not have the problem. Perhaps it's something to do with the board software rather than the ads.

Again, you shouldn't be bombarded with Active X notices, when I use IE I don't get them. So, I'll ask again, are you sure that your work computers are free of Spyware (Gator etc.)? Because it really sounds like you have a program running in the background of IE.

Fraser

That really sounds like spyware Treb. I'm guessing you've got something that's trying to redirect the Adsense ads to something else so they can get credit for serving up ads. Wait for your new computer and I'm sure this problem will go away. You can also turn off Active X completely so it'll just never run automatically.
