I give up, there's never a time this site isn't getting pounded by hundreds of users. I'm rebuilding the search index. This should make the site sluggish for a few minutes.

Was this a one-off or something that needs to be done intermittently?

I'm not sure why the search engine is malfunctioning. I think this is a deeper problem, and I'll have to take it up with vBulletin. it could be a size issue.

Fraser, you ought to see the trouble they're having with the polls over on JREF since their vBulletin upgrade. It's actually kind of fun: you call up the poll results (either through the link or by voting in it) and the results get attached to some random poll thread elsewhere in the forum. Makes for some interesting non-sequitors.

[Dumb Question]Is this why search is not working?[/Dumb Question]

Maybe. It's a tricky problem. The problem is the forum is so vast and there are so many members that running the tool that rebuilds the search index slows down the whole forum for half a day, so I'm not eager to do it often.
