View Full Version : Thread Links on Bottom

Is it possible to get the links that map the thread, like so:

Bad Astronomy and Universe Today Forum > General > About BAUT

at the bottom of the thread as well as the top, I hate, hate, hate having to scroll all the way back up to go back to the forum.

Use a browser that supports tabs, eg firefox. You open the forum, and open each thread in its own tab. Then when you're done, you're automagically back in the forum. I cannot imagine navigating a forum without tabs.

There is also forum jump, right at the bottom.

Why should I have to change my browser to deal with it? And the forum jump is okay but it doesn't really do what I was wanting as if you are several pages deep in a forum you have to then go digging back into it again. Some of us still have to live with slow-as dial-up.

It was my best suggestion. I don't think the admins have an option for what you want, but it would requiring hacking or switching to another templete, which I doubt they will do any time soon.

Depending on your browser setttings doesn't the "home" key take you to the top of the page and Cntrl ← take you back a page?

It'd be easier to stroll into the White House and take a nap in the Oval Office than to do anything with our network here at work. Everything is locked down and nothing can be installed without 3 or 4 IT guys getting involved (job security you know). Even then they've got done so mancy changes to prevent us from fiddling with the system (can't even change the screensaver and they almost forced everyone to have the same desktop) that half the time they themselves are thwarted when they try to make any changes much less install new stuff.

So I too would like breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page.

I agree with PhantomWolf and Captian Kidd. The bread crumb trail at the bottom of the page would be a big help and should not be too hard to implement.

In the mean time, if you scroll the rest of the way to the bottom of the page, there is a link for "Top" which will take you up quickly. That's what I've been doing.

I agree, I'd love to see something like that. It's on the to-do list.

I second that notion. There are a lot of new things here that are nice, and I know the mods are working hard.

this is a simple thing that will make lots of people happy

another problem is that when you reply it takes you to your post.

then you have to scroll up,... DOH

If you implement the breadcrumbs-on-the-bottom, and if it's possible, I'd prefer to see the link below the last post but above the quick reply box.

That's a brilliant idea - I'd never thought of that. I use Firefox anyway, so I'm experimenting with that one. Takes a little getting used to, though.

It's especially useful during those odd spells where suddenly in the middle of a visit everything gets marked read. You keep the new posts screen on one tab and open new tabs from there. Any idea if vBulletin experiences those types of issues?

So you've got the same flavor of IT there too. Helpful aren't they? Do you have the equivalent of Mordac Preventer of Information Technology (from Dilbert) running the show? The once-helpful computer guys have been metamorphosing into Mordac all over the country (and world) for a number of years now

Once the transition is complete, IT will then be changed. It will stand for

Institutionalized Tyranny

Since the ITPTB wanted to keep the "IT" acronym, there was no room for the additional Department of Overblown Paranoia (DOOP). What a shame! "DOOPIT" has such an appropriate ring to it.

Meanwhile, here's Mordac!

It's so sad here. The entire Dilbert cast is represented. Every week at least 1 if not more of the strips sadly applies.

"Achieves expectations" is a coveted review level.
We're give three options for a project, all horrible. After being told that they are the only options, we choose the least wrong one. It goes for review and then we're assigned the worst.

The worse part is apparently this is so much the norm that everybody seems to think Scott Adams has a spy in their company. So leaving for a better company is obviously not an option. :D

Ever thought of starting your own (company, that is)?

Hmm my own nuclear power generating company... err I'll pass.

But yes, my wife and I have talked about starting up something like an otaku coffeeshop type thingamabob.

It's less useful for those of us who have three or four different boards open at the same time. The mess that would be created by browsing all of them this way would be unweildly.

I notice that the quote button doesn't include the quote from the thread that's being quoted. Hrmm.

Yes, unlike BA and UT, vBulletin doesn't nest quotes when you quote (if you get my drift).

It's one of the things I'd like to look into when we've settled down - or, if others feel this would be a useful feature, y'all could add it to the open 'wish list' ;)

We do. My project team is distributed all over the province. Obviously, we need to be able to communicate. The best solution we've found is to make extensive use of instant messaging software, but my boss has been in a running firefight (figuratively speaking) trying to keep IT from blocking those ports on us. (And unless the MSN servers are down right now, they may have just done this.)

They are also violently (also figuratively speaking) opposed to establishing some safer alternative for us to use.

Basically, they're trying to establish the perfectly safe network and patting themselves on the back every time they roll back useful connectivity. My team have been snidely suggesting they just do it all at once and unplug the servers outright.

Meh.

When I do that I often give separate "subjects" their own windows. But I see what you mean. I tend to only close the browser once a week and have a hard time closing tabs; it tends to get *very* messy.

Okay, I've implemented a second navbar down at the bottom. It was fairly easy to put it at this location, but it would get nasty to try and bring it up any more, so I'm hoping this does the trick for you. Let me know if you run into any bugs.

It'd be a little more convenient above the quick reply box, I suspect, but it's probably just as good where it is. Thanks Fraser, that'll be a timesaver.

If you click on this http://www.bautforum.com/images/buttons/collapse_tcat.gif you will collapse the quick reply box. You can also collapse the posting rules box, thus bringing the bottom menu bar closer to the action.

Edit: This is an option that is global and carried over to the next session.
