New as of October 28th....

I'm semi-retired, now in a library part time.

Was in Air Force missile R+D 1966-73, worked airliner maintenance, and then airshow crew for 20 years. During that time, there were too many newspaper-magazine-TV writing jobs to remember.

For hobbies (now), I am a Civil War reenactor, writer, and dabble in local politics.

Hmm I usually go on the Universe Today site a few times a day just to see whats going on, and I noticed the "forum" button on the side, and one thing lead to another, and I decided to join. I actually had no idea "Universe Today" even existed until a few weeks ago...

Umm when it comes to me, obviously I'm interested in space, physics etc. Maybe I'll do something with it later in life, who knows. Anyway, I'm 17, a senior in high school...enlisted Army....really sarcastic etc etc etc...

Hi I'm currently a graduate student in the Biotechnology program at University of Pennsylvania and even though I don't have much experience in Astronomy, aside from looking at the moon with a telescope, I still find space fascinating and maybe that is because we have yet to explore the whole universe. I guess the unknown interests me. :)

I just thought I'd say hello and tell you that for the first time I've identified some stars(finally, after days of foggy skies):

New member here, seemed the most logical place to start.
Early 30's, Situated in Northern Ontario (though often enough we are referred to as 'mid-north').
Long time interest in astronomy. sense of something bigger leaves me awed. could be said that it helps center or ground me.
first time scope owner:
Celestron 114slt, standard lenses that come with (9mm and 25mm?), 2X barlowe, neximage ccd

Dont know why the 114slt was discontinued (anyone have ideas?)
brought the scope out a few times. Quite excited... humbling experience, have a lot to learn (struggled with initial setup and alignment - have done a substantial amount of reading since then).
Saw the moon through - easy target... nice view...

grateful to have found a place like this.

Hi im Darkwood, ive had a long interest in physics, the workings of the grand down to the sub atomical soup, im hoping to cure my occasional boredom by surfing and chatting on here, im pushing 40 and my claim to fame was writing a physics essay in the mid-eighties explaining my belief in the existence of blackholes at the centre of most galaxies, unfortunately i only achieved a C- but was given good comment for my imagination.... kind of ticked me off when 10 or so years later the good imagination was breaking news in the astronomy world but sadly not by me, but hey i was 14 and probably more a lucky stab in the dark then an educated guess.

Hello all,

Pleased to meet you. I’m a new member (as is likely painfully obvious from this first post). Looking through the site it’s already been an eye opener!

This is my first “serious” venture into astronomy; or basically “looking up at night”. I’d like to make the comment that my recent purchase of an iPad, and the associate stargazing applications, are what got me really interested, the ability to have a “guide” is invaluable.

With just a pair of binoculars, I’ve already found Jupiter, several constellations (including famous stars/galaxies/binary systems/moons[actually just one!]/etc). Stuff that’s been around for millennia, but for whatever reason, I’d never really noticed before

One question keeps popping into my head, if I see something exceptional, how should it be reported? Obviously the idea of that happening is extremely small, but if Betelgeuse goes nova, and I think I’m the first to see it, where would one go to check?

Thanks to all the community for keeping the conversation enjoyable and respectful, unlike so many other corners of the Internet.

All the best,

Trakz

I started posting on the internet at the Blackvault forum particularily interested in countering the Apollo Hoax believer arguements. I am not as well versed in all things Apollo as so many here but most of the time thats not required to counter things such as 'moving flag' or 'dust fell too quickly'.
Most of the past 9 years though I have been posting on the JREF forum, mostly countering 9/11 idiocy. For a refereshing break I chose to return here where that nonsense is not countenanced.

The Newmars forum has gone down, and I was directed by Google to a thread on this site when I queried it's status, so... hopefully there'll be a lot of discussions and forums on here that I can discuss matter relating to space colonization and, more importantly to me, terraforming - hence the name; if you see a Terraformer on a space forum, it's most probably me...

Hi I'm a planning officer working in Edinburgh Scotland. Eternal optomist about space exploration. I've listened to Richard Poggies excellent astronomy 161 and 162 classes. Listened to several courses on Electrical Engineering and one on Quantum Mechanics and listened to all of the UT podcasts and starting on the Skeptics Guide to the Universe.

Truthfully really struggling with Quantum Mechanics because its so counter intuitive. Think I might have to sit down and just do lots of sums. Look forward to discussions.

Gradually getting very interested in Robotics think it holds so much potential for space.

Hi, I'm Macross Princess (Ashlyn). My goal is to enter a career dealing with Astronautics develop propulsion systems that will make space travel an easier thing to accomplish & less costly (Probaly will do so soon, when I turn 18). So far I've been reading thesis's & adding my own thoughts into them along with creating my own. I've been studying up on things for two years, which is a very short period of time. I've also messed around with designs but I think that propulsion comes first in this case.

Hi, QuantumNanotechnology, SUPER UNIVERSE, and MacrossPrincess! Welcome to BAUT.

SUPER UNIVERSE, you can't start a thread in the Universe Today subforum, because that section is simply a gateway to the Universe Today website. New articles on the website show up as a new thread here. If you want to post a model of the universe that is at odds with mainstream science, it will have to be in the Against The Mainstream forum. There are additional rules there, so it's probably a good idea to read up a little on how things work there, before you post.

I finally decided to officially join the board and do more than just read. I'm a big follower of manned space exploration, and pretty much love anything that flies. I'll be out cutting the grass, hear an airplane fly overhead and just stop and stare at it until it's out of sight, which has caused more than a few comments from the neighbors, but oh well. I also have a friend who doesn't believe the moon landings happened, and when I've tried to present evidence, he merely shrugs it off with a "well, you weren't there (on the moon), so you don't really know it happened." To which I reply "you weren't there for World War II, yet you seem to think that happened." Usually results in him walking off.

Hi all,

My son (17) and I (56) both read BAUT and UT constantly. I've gotten so I tend to come here to see even news topics, rather than the normal media. I wandered in a couple of months back, just researching astronomy and physics topics, but got addicted. I feel like I'm on first name basis with the regular posters here and figured it was time I was more than a userid showing up in list at the bottom ;).

The only introduction items I can think of are, my son is in High School, and I being retired, help him a lot. We've focused his senior year on science topics, C++/3D computer programming and studying the pitfalls of persuasive argument and stove pipe thinking (The HS curriculum I'd have loved to have had). It often dovetails perfectly with BAUT topics.

I doubt we will post much as we tend to just observe, think about a topic and then study it ourselves (we are natural lurkers). But I just wanted to say, I haven't found a better place to lurk ;). I enjoy that politeness counts here and yet, few roll over on fallacious thinking. Great forum.

Blinded by science

My name is Matthew Silverstone and I am the author of a book called Blinded by Science, a book that will make you question everything that you thought you already knew. If you would like to know the science as to why the moon, the sun and the planets affect not only plants, animal and fish, but also humans, read my chapter 3, "The moon and the Sun". The book is free to download until the 30th of April.

For some reason, western science has dismissed the idea that the moon plays a role in our biological male-up, but if you analysis the facts, this is patently illogical. It is undeniable that the moon affects every plant, fish, bird and animals as numerous studies have proven. It has also been proven that animals and humans are behaviourally 100% the same. Therfore if animals react to lunar cycles, by definition humans will as well. The major probelm in science however, is to find out exactly what it effects. I can tell you now that it does NOT effect birth rates, mental illnesses, violence, menstruation, period synchronicity, or most of hte areas of reseach that investigates this science. But why would it, why would the moon affect us in these ways. Why have millions of pounds been spent on researching realtionships that could not possible exist. The moon is a big magnet, emitting electromagnetic waves, which affect much of our biological make-up, but not our personality.

I would love to talk more, but as my chapter is over 60 pages long on just this subject, I could be here for a long time.

First, welcome to BAUT.

Second, I have removed the link to your book from your post. We have rules against advertising and promotion of products (Rule 6).

Third, we have strict rules about advocating non-mainstream science ideas (Rule 13). I very strongly suggest that you carefully review our rules (http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php/32864-**-Rules-For-Posting-To-This-Board-**).

Third, I just banned for spamming a user with the name "harryb987" who coincidently was trying to advertise your book. If we find you are using sock puppets to promote your ideas, you will be permanently banned (rule 10).

Hello everyone!

In addition to being a lifelong fan of Astronomy, I am also an as yet, unpublished Science Fiction writer. About a year ago, I got into listening to podcasts as a means to help pass the time at work. The SciFi muse had struck me again at about the same time and I decided to look up science podcasts as a means to further educate myself and help me give my material credibility and realism within the context of the story. Via the Zune Marketplace and Google, I stumbled upon what I learned to be the Organized Skepticism Movement and their podcasts. Among others, I was also led to Phil Plait’s BA Blog, Universe Today, Astronomy Cast, 365 Days…, et al.

Oh wow. What a ride was I in for.

For the past year I have been a voracious consumer of Skeptical and Scientific podcasts. I have been able to listen to the entirety of the podcast archives of the cornerstones of Skepticism. It has been as though my brain was thirsty for Knowledge and Rational Thought and my only limitation in trying to drink from this fire hose is my time and the need to sleep.

(In SGU episode #295, Bob’s comment about listening to 250 episodes in four months, just might have been a reference to an email I sent them…)

So now I am going back through the Astronomy cast episodes and I listened to episode #104 today. (Live at DragonCon 2008 with Dr. Pamela Gay, Dr. Phil Plait and Dr. Kevin Graizer) During the audience Q&A the question came up as to where an amateur SciFi writer could go for science advisor input. Pamela recommended here at the BA/UT forums. Since I have amateur SciFi writer and just plain old curiosity questions, I figured it was time I got off my keister, stop lurking anonymously and join up already. I fully realize that that podcast is over 2 ˝ years old and that info could be outdated. Is this something that is still done/permitted here? I am aware of the Science and Entertainment Exchange, but I am hardly an “entertainment industry professional.”

I have no formal training in the Astronomical Sciences, I would rate my level of knowledge at that of a well versed everyday citizen, perhaps even the “armchair *insert field here*” level. I just might ask some far out there questions, but I do promise to use the search function first.

Forgive the overly long introduction; although I may only be a sporadic poster, I am certainly not a “hit and runner.” My intention was to convey my sincerity and my intentions to be a well intentioned member, if not a productive one.

Howdie everybody! I'm Bert from Belgium and would like to let you folks know I became a member just to find out how to color the moon in such a way Mr. Jose Escamilla had managed so magnificantly. I'm working on images from Mars, some of which show remarkable anomalies, and the trick is indeed to manage to make them stand out in the original published JPL images that have been treated with thick layers of NASA-JPL "Red Planet-Red".

So nothing more to say really, 'cause there's really no other major reason for me to be here, other than my immense interest in the standardized method Mr. Escamilla has developed that has given us the Moon in all its splendor, regardless of whether or not there might be towers or whatever else. Buzz Aldrin, btw, has confirmed that there's a monolite on Phobos, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's any on the moon.

Hi everyone, long time BA reader here, just starting to get involved.

I'm not an astronomer of any sort, I just find myself interested in, well, everything. Particularly the technology involved in big-science projects like the LHC, Hubble, and all the probes and space-based observatories we've ever launched.

Hi, I am Frank, and enjoy astronomy and cosmology, I am interested in both Main Stream ( the boys with the biggest toys) and Plasma Cosmology. I even like the fringe concepts of EU. I was involved in a forum, much like an old west frontier style saloon. But am now seeking another forum to participate in, Solon has a user name there and was driving me nuts with his proselytizing, I like how he was dealt with here. So I thought a little law and order might be a nice respite. I'm not here to push EU, but more mellow pursuits of seeing how aspects of Plasma Cosmology might be finding levels of acceptance in the main stream science discussions. Thanks to Solon on the other forum, I found I have an interest in space probe optical instrumentation.

I can't remember if I have ever been a registered user in BAUT, so if I am registered as another user, its not intentional. If you want to search it out, I will assist in any way I can. I might be confused with a physics.org forum.

Thanks
Frank

Welcome fosborn. Don't worry about old logins, as long as you don't use both at the same time.. an old forgotten one isn't a problem. We try to stay away from making things personal, but I do remember that user coming here with the wacky ideas of some indian guy. It didn't go well. As for plasma cosmology... well, there's a sticky thread in the Against The Mainstream forum that might provide some helpful reading.

My name is Andy, I'm 30 and from the south coast of England (West Sussex), very near the legend that is Sir Patrick Moore.

I stubbled across this forum while looking for ideas on how to encourage the interests of my young nephew. This was after he took one look at my telescope and his eyes lit up with the magic only kids can muster.

From there i just got lost with inspiration and thoughts reading all the extremely interesting threads... I'm going to be on here alot more often...

Hi, I'm Ashen.

I'd like to call myself a space enthusiast but I've barely done enough to assert that status.

If I may be so bold, I created a thread called 'an attempt to understand Special Relativity', which fully explain my woes (I hope), and if you can take a look in there and tell me what I'm doing wrong, that would be great.

Thank you!

Hello, all. I'm David, a 62 y/o North American. I have registered primarily to have a group of astronomical skeptics critique my UFO sighting. As a near life long astronomy buff and believer in science, I am hard-pressed to explain it to myself.

I am not sure if I should post the account in CT or ATM, or elsewhere. Maybe a mod can let me know....

hi folks,

i'm paul, in my 40s, moved to australia from germany a few years ago.
i studied math & physics in germany. professionally, i am a freelance software designer, working mostly on medical instruments (measuring of physiological signals and performing digital signal processing on them). physics has been a passion for me since i was 12. i read a (layman's) book about the philosophical implications of quantum physics and i was hooked for life. haven been following physics (incl. astrophysics) since i finished my studies until this day.
i am very aware, however, that the human mind is not really designed to understand the universe.
we really know little to nothing and most of what we believe to know for certain is subject to radical change...

i have been reading baut for a while and i am de-lurking now.

Hi, I'm a refugee from New Mars Forums which seems to have folded together with all my posts from the past 10 (?) years or so....
Having stumbled on BAUD just now, I'm attempting to fathom how to navigate this rather (to me) more difficult setup. My age of 85 having put me out of the running for (1) becoming an astronaut on the ISS and (2) witnessing the 1st human(s) on Mars or even (3) the next landing on the Moon...I've taken to writing near-future science fiction. Now, if I can only figure out how to post this pathetic bleat for assistance and/or encouragement--here goes.

Hi dicktice, welcome to BAUT. We except all refugees! :D

You actually seem to have figured out how to post just fine. What I suspect is the apparent problem is that all posts from "newbies" go into what we call "the moderation queue", in other words, they get held in limbo until a moderator can approve them. This is all part of what we do to stop spam. Depending on time of day, how many mods are around, and what else they are doing it can be from minutes till hours till we approve the post. Just be patient - it will appear. After you get a few more posts and you stop being a "newbie" this will stop happening.

Hi well I'm new and all so just standing here in the shade of the potted palm appraising my new forum friends before stepping into the light so to speak. You need to know about me I don't have literary talent at all basically because I'm not bright enough so I'm not going to be attempting to outsmart anyone and while I appreciate a good belly laugh I'm not that funny myself although I have to be honest and tell you that you can never tell when I'm being ironic. Lots of laughs here, my kind of dry and best I can promise is that I shall at least try to get a laugh rather than just taking yours, or is that your's? No, no I mean it.
And as to the subject itself, Bad Astrology, I am more curious than I am knowledgeable so if you could keep that in mind. I feel comfortable mingling with you 'eggheads', not intending to offend and my hope is that you will accept me into your forum.

Quite some time i signed up here, so i think its about time i say hello.

My name is Alex, im a 20 year old girl from Denmark. My little sister have always been into astronomy, and even though i have always been a hardcore sci-fi fan, it never really seemed to capture my attention. I begun to get interested when i started researching the whole 2012 stuff, and then i realized how amazing astronomy is! Now i cant get my head out of it again, and i guess i got bitten really bad by a tiny astronomer.

Im looking forward to start using this forum :)

I will apologize in advance for not being educated at a high level in physics or math. I'm a college dropout who has since completed JD, MBA, and MPH degrees, and will be starting medical school in August. My career goals are to use my modest intelligence and hard work to promote better health and education primarily in the US via healthcare legislation, public health research, and practicing one-on-one with patients. Eventually, I hope to form a non-profit collaborative to assist/educate the poor in third world countries in ways that have not yet been considered. Because I am a long way from completing my education, I have not yet crystallized my goals. I am hoping that through greater life experience and philanthropic involvement, my life goals and purpose will come into focus. A little more about me: physics was my favorite subject in high school and college; I am a huge car buff: I edit quarterly Nissan, Lamborghini, and Acura NSX magazines, and hope to one day race in the Le Mans 24 Hours; I hope to become an ophthalmologist; I believe there may be a place for God in science, although I don't know where that place is; I founded and administered a five-year nonprofit organization dedicated to building schools for Sri Lankan survivors of the 2004 tsunami; finally, I love learning new things, and look forward to learning more about the universe from all of you and the forum itself into the future...

I apologize if introducing myself this way is inappropriate, but I want to give you all a short background so you understand I'm coming from a very limited physics background, but am able to understand straightforward explanations, have decent intellectual ability, and am ALWAYS willing to learn. Also, I want you all to know I have a personality and a sense of humor and am not an automaton! So I look forward to getting to know you all and having fun together on this forum. :)

(This introduction is part of a post with an attached set of ideas that was blocked from the alternate ideas section of the forum...if someone could please tell me the section of the forum that allows discussion of ideas that do not require support, for those forum members without relevant education who seek to learn, PLEASE let me know. Hi

I'm a 26 year old girl living in India. I am interested in world building for a SciFi/Fantasy setting. So I have been looking and looking for an active forum where we could actively brainstorm relevant ideas. It's not as much fun world building if you keep feeling that you are getting a majority of things wrong just because you are not getting any inputs on your thoughts. I hope it's ok if my primary interest for joining is not because I love astronomy (though i do of course). It's just that I love sci fi and fantasy more :) And they have been the reason behind my interest in astronomy.
