Welcome to the Bad Astronomy and Universe Today Bulletin Board!
Here it is, what will certainly be one of the biggest and best astronomy and space discussion boards on the web. Technically, this board is new, but as the merger of two well-established and quite large bulletin boards, it already has a long and rich history. There is already a built-in community, and we're sure it'll grow and get even better.
Since the board is new, and we knew our posters would be chomping at the bit, we have decided to go live with the basic set up in place. There are some bells and whistles like avatars and image uploading, but not everything in place just yet. We'll be adding features as time goes on. This will include pre-made avatars, a reputation setting for posters, and lots of other fun stuff.
We have not put up the FAQ yet, so there is, for now, one simple rule: be polite. If you're not sure if your post is polite, then it probably isn't. :-)
There are three admins here: The Bad Astronomer (Phil Plait from the Bad Astronomy board), Fraser (from Universe Today), and Philser, a chimera of both of us. If you see a post by one of those three, we suggest you pay attention.
We expect there will be lots of questions; if you have any, post them to this forum, About BAUT.
About usernames: if you came here from BA or UT, then your username and password should still work. If you had accounts on both boards, and used the same email adress for both, then your accounts were merged. If you had accounts on both, but different emails addresses, we have to merge them by hand. We'll be happy to do this, but please hold off a week or so while we get more important issues under control. We'll let everyone know when we can take care of that.
So there you have it! Again, welcome! The Universe is now at your disposal.

It's "kinda" funny. I went to sleep early last night (a little after 7PM pacific time, as I usually do) and when I awoke early this morning, the board was "up and running".
So I "suffered" absolutely no "down time"...:)
A painless change-over thanks to Fraser and Phil...
Great job, guys!!!

Hi,
I go on holliday for two weeks and everything changes! (maybe I should do it more often!) Looks good so far, I will have a better look around when the jet-lag wares off!

This is weird. But no more than the original BABB when I first arrived. I'll get oriented before long.

Well done guys for the speedy move, I like the look of the new board already.
I logged on today not really expecting the new board to be up yet (I work in IT... so I'm a pessimist!) and was pleasantly surprised.

I'm sitting here smiling.
I've been Internet forum-ing since January of 2000, and this is by far the hands-down coolest thing that has ever happened to me. WTG, both of y'all.

This is neat. I get to use my avatars I make! Whee!
I like this almost better than PhpBB! :D It's really easy to use, and similar to PhpBB. Good job.

I like, I like. :)
Now I've gotta ask: how did you agree on "Philser" and not, say, "Frasil" and other such variants? ;)

What great news! I've been a huge fan of both BA and UT forever. :) Now they're together! That is soooooooooooooo cool.
Congrats on the technical changes too ... it couldn't have been a walk in the park merging both user tables. I'm a developer too and though I like phpbb, vbulletin is good also.
Good luck and clear skies! I hope to come out of lurk mode any moment now.

Congratulations on the merger.
Good to see you migrating to vBulletin - much better than phpbb IMO. I'll be keeping an eye on things - all the best.

Thanks for the board and Bad Astronomy in general.
I teach secondary science in Texas. Bad Astronomy is the best reference to debunk the pseudo science so many of the kids bring to school with them.

I'm sure that the merger between the two forums will be a good thing for all, but IMHO, I think that you can take a good thing too far. That domain name (bautforum.com) deserves a place on the Bad Domain Names board. Why not stick with Fraser's old name?

Hi EagleUK,
bautforum.com is just a working title. People have started threads where you can suggest names. No doubt there will ultimately be a short list compiled and then a competition or poll to decide the final name of the forum.

My Dear Fraser Cain and Phil Plait,
I am very much grateful to you for the kind invitation to post my views in the new forum. Really I am first to appreciate your efforts to maintain such forums to exchange views of the people from the different parts of the world. It goes without saying that now is the time for such efforts as our world itself has turned to be a big forum. I feel very happy to join you and I hope that in near future I will be able to spare myself for this sacred duty.
Thanking you please,
[tarajee20@hotmail.com]

Philser, a chimera of both of us.
I thought that sort of technology was banned.
Speaking of which, how come I'm still around. It's been an hour I think. Guess nobody is home.
Think I'll steal something from the fridge.

Hey, I like this style of board, similar to the one I use over at ToonZone (3000+posts there!) so hopefully I'll be posting more when I replace the processor on my computer.

Anyway, how come we never see Phil make any posts on the forums?

He's busy!
Actually The Bad Astronomer has a postcount of 5,931.
So just hang around and you might get lucky.
