Mars, similar to Earth, experiences weather patterns. Mars just kicks up a lot of Dust in its storms.

The MGS status reports (http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/status/reports/msop-mgs.html) indicate that MGS resumed narrow-angle photography of Mars around the end of July after a hiatus due to the dust storms.

And here's (http://tes.la.asu.edu/webdata/dust_mov/dust_mov_today.html) what Mars looks like today, according to the TES instrument on MGS. (http://tes.la.asu.edu/) Seems to be pretty clear now, but they have some cool movies and images from when it wasn't.
