Anti Nuke

My name is brain and I am new here. However I wish to raise a question to you all. Is there any way we can build an anti nuclear bomb, so that it can nullify the effect of a launched nuke before it hits its target? I have a faint idea on how to build one and I need your opinion.

An anti nuclear bomb seems unlikely, but missiles can destroy nuclear weapons before they reach their target, Both fision and fusion bombs typically fail to detinate if damaged by a near by explosions of small size. Neil

I think he might be referring to the "nuclear dampeners" of certain sci-fi stories like those used in the Hammer's Slammers series. Rendered incoming warheads inert.

So do you mean stop the weapon before it arrives? Yes, that's possible. Difficult but possible. There have been successful mid-course and a few final-course interceptor concepts.

Or do you mean somehow stop the nuclear weapon from exploding? I'm not sure what you mean here. Possibly another nuclear weapon with a large neutron flux could be used to fry the electronics and even "fissile" the fission component of a nuclear weapon. This was the concept behind the short-lived Safeguard Program, but it does have other issues with fallout and reliability..

Still radioactive when it strikes the Earth, though...
