View Full Version : my husband's telescope
Hi, I hope you can help me... my husband is an amature astronamer. He has a 4 ich refractor? reflector? it's Tasco... it has d=114 F=900 on the side of it. He is always complainig about the tripod and how he wants a differet one with a better mount. He currently has the one that it came with... it has the two big brackets that wrap around the telescop itself and hold it in place. can you give some suggestions? Also, he bought a drive motor for his telescope, but alas, it is not EXACTLY the right one, so it does not keep up quite right with the earth's rotation and the pictures come out blurry. Plus he's always having to re-adjust every few minutes. (he didn't pay very much for it, so it is okay) It's a Mead. Can you tell me, what kind of motor should he get? (I'm looking for christmas presents.)

I don't really know much about hardware... did he buy it from a store or from a private seller? It sounds like he got a bad deal I'm afraid...
Hopefully one of the other members might be able to help, but if not, I'd recommend you either contact your local astronomical society or your nearest reputable telescope retailer. If you're going to contact a retailer, make sure they specialise in telescopes - don't just go for the nearest Wal-Mart - you want to talk to someone who really knows his stuff :P

d=114 F=900 sounds like a 4.5" Reflector. It could be that the drive motor is just bad quality.

1. Tasco is lousey
2. Their mounts are notoriously poor
3. Try getting him a good quality scope from a local astronomy shop
4. Some links to reputable dealers known world wide are:
There are a lot more.
Check the local university and see if there is an astronomy club nearby. Perhaps a membership to the club would be a better investment as he could go to star parties and try out a lot of good quality equipment before investing in another mistake.

Here is the best thing you can do:
Get him to join a local amateur astronomy group. The vast majority of people are very friendly, and remember all too well the telescopes they started with. These people can help him get the best out of his current 'scope, and get first hand knowledge of what is available in the price range that is right for you both!
There are many astronomy clubs across Canada. The first place I'd try is the Royal Astronomical SOciety of Canada at http://www.rasc.ca . Don't let the name put you off...the vast majority of people are 'just plain folks' who are amateurs just like your husband.
There are many other non-RASC groups across Canada, too. Check out these pages from Sky and Telescope Magazine: http://skyandtelescope.com/resources/organizations/ .
Thanks everybody for you advice! That is all very helpful!
