I was watching ‘Space Odyssey’ on the Discovery Channel recently, where they mentioned about the worm-hole as sort of shortcut tunnel in space-time. One cannot travel into deep space by any conventional means; even traveling with the light speed, which is impossible though, is not sufficient. They mentioned about the possibility of using worm holes to travel far in galactic space. By traveling with a speed lesser than light through worm hole, one can reach a target quicker than light.

Once I had a chance to read some material about extra terrestrial life in a book “Why nothing can travel faster than light” by Zimmerman. In there, they indicated that aliens might be using worm-hole route to travel across universe and to earth.

I am wondering what are worm holes? Are they science fiction or reality?

Theory leaning towards fiction I think. I think if they do exist, the galaxy may be thought of as a cyclone (or hurricane) and a wormhole as a twister/tornado. Just me though, and I'm no astro physicist :)

From what I can understand, on the quantum level there are always extremely tiny wormholes created and collapsing all the time. Also, some mean that a black hole spinning fast enough to create a circular singularity could possibly create a large wormhole. I found and article at New Scientist, and there's things in it that I do not eally understand, but will try to find more info on it.

Wormholes are leaning more towards the fiction side I belive, its seems to be a pretty bogus idea but surprisingly enough sciencest discuss the fact and have writen books on it. But they are thought to be a way of time travel or space travel. If there was a wormhole making a U shape and attaching itself to the same solar system I guess you could say then it would be used for means of time travel where as if there was a wormhole that was to conect to various parts of the universe could bring you instantanily in space travel or other universes. But also I think I heard that your space ship or whatever your using to enter these things have to have some kind of greatly negitive charged field around it. I do not know if I believe this idea tho and even if it true I will be long dead so i'm not to worried about it.

Wormholes occur naturally all the time. Only to look at them you would need to look space 10^-32 mm and have to be able to freeze the scene every 10^-43 seconds. These are quantum wormholes. But they open up, for a very brief instant and then collapse. To keep one open you would need to insert some false vacuum. If you could insert some false vacuum you would get an open wormhole!

I was unaware of wormholes on the quantum level, that is really cool. I will have to do some more reading about those. Thanks.
