View Full Version : Discussion: New Comet Could Wow Skywatchers
2003-Jul-08, 10:08 PM
SUMMARY: A new comet has been found that may put on a spectacular show this spring. Comet Ikeya-Zhang was found simultaneously on February 1st by astronomers in Japan and China and given the combined name - it was then confirmed shortly after by many other comet hunters. It's expected that it will flare up by early March, and be clearly visible in the night sky until some time in April. Comets are unpredictable; it could be spectacular, and it could just disappear, so keep your eyes up.

It did turn out to be quite a good one actually, and I would hope by the next time it swings by our neck of the woods, in about 2370 or so, we'll be able to send tourists up to get a close-up view of the nucleus spitting and spattering its way through the Inner Solar System.
Here's an interesting webpage about the Comet.

And some great photos......

Its a pity that there really hasn't been a spectacular Comet since Ikeya-Zhang, at least that I can remember.....

jkmccrann, this is the last straw. I saw the subject line on this thread and thought it was some exciting, breaking news. Instead, I open it up to find that you've pointlessly resurrected yet another years-old thread. You've been warned about this behavior, but it doesn't seem to have helped. I've banned you for a week. Any further such disruptive thread bumps after your return will result in a permanent banning.

jkmccrann, this is the last straw. snip
We all have some irritating posts, but this was getting too much. Even the new links are 3+ years old pages.
I had visions of comet Kohoutek (sp?) going through my mind.

I dont know, but wouldnt it help to close threads older than one year? especially threads which dont even have one reply?

Actually, that might not be a bad idea. If you want to post in such a thread, you can ask a mod. If you have a good reason, they can open it again for you.
That is, if the mods want to deal with the requests.

I just searched for threads older than a year. All of them I checked were closed and the messages were deleted. Strange this one is up after more than two years.
[now i think of it i can guess why its not closed ;) ]

I'm going to lock this thread so it will disappear down the list and people won't keep thinking it's something new.
