A friend of mine just asked if I had any book recomendations for a 9-year-old concerning astronomy or physics. I pointed him to the Asimov "how did we find out..." series. If anyone else has some more up-to-date advice, let me know and I'll pass it along. I may just get something for my neice, too!

There's a Cat in the Hat book called "There's No Place Like Space." I'm not sure if that's aimed at 9-year olds specifically, but it's for children, anyway.

I wish I could think of the name of another I saw just last week, too. Drats.

when I was 9, my dad got me Cosmos since we had been watching it on tv. Probably a little too much for a 9 year-old, but I did like looking at the pictures and I did learn some big words.

Exploring the Night Sky (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0920656668) by Terence Dickinson contains beautiful color paintings of the solar system and beyond. This book is clear, concise, inspiring, and accurate.

See the Stars (http://KenCroswell.com/seethestars.html) by Ken Croswell teaches a beginner a bright new constellation each month, featuring stunning full-color photographs from acclaimed photographer Akira Fujii of each constellation.

In lighter reading she might like the Jedi Quest Star Wars series. Not too scientific, but it helps put space on the map for kids. My 8-yr-old loves these (her first book report was on one of them last Monday).

The Cartoon Guide to Physics (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0062731009/qid=1099660700/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-3411369-6523931?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) is very good and accurate.

Also The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0590414291/qid=1099660796/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3411369-6523931?v=glance&s=books) is also good.
