i'm curious to what you guys would make of this:
Hubble Detects Mysterious Spaceship-Shaped Object Traveling at 11,000MPH (http://gizmodo.com/5462539/hubble-detects-mysterious-spaceship+shaped-object-traveling-at-11000mph)

a spaceship of aliens silly enough to throw out water, a comet that collided with something, or an intensely invested x-box commercial?

My guess is it's a B-Wing.

This is what Hubblesite (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2010/07/) says about it:
The mystery object was discovered on January 6, 2010, by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) sky survey. The object appears so unusual in ground-based telescopic images that discretionary time on NASA's Hubble Space Telescope was used to take a close-up look. The observations show a bizarre X-pattern of filamentary structures near the point-like nucleus of the object and trailing streamers of dust. This complex structure suggests the object is not a comet but instead the product of a head-on collision between two asteroids traveling five times faster than a rifle bullet. Astronomers have long thought that the asteroid belt is being ground down through collisions, but such a smashup has never before been seen.

I think pictures of astronomical stuff, even those imaged by earth-orbit telescopes, is some distance from Space Exploration, the theme of this section, so I'll try to get a mod to move it.
As to what the "mystery" is, you maybe forgot to be a faithful follower of the BA Blog, where you can read news (instead of fantasy) such as: Hubble captures pictures of asteroid collision! (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/02/02/hubble-captures-picture-of-asteroid-collision/)

If the BA Blog were shadowed here, then it would be easier to be a faithful follower.

We'll try Astronomy, unless someone offers proof that its a spaceship. ;)

Here (http://blogs.nature.com/news/thegreatbeyond/2010/02/space_collision_caught_on_came.html) is what the journal Nature has to say (in a blog).
The Hubble telescope has snapped the aftermath of an asteroid collision.
Great pictures.

It's a big Universe. Talk about it here.

Where is the other asteroid? That was my first thought.

The cloud of debris is my first thought.

There is at least one earlier thread on this collision:
Something is happening in the Asteroid Belt (http://www.bautforum.com/astronomy/99596-something-happening-asteroid-belt.html)
ETA: UT: Hubble Takes A Look at Possible Asteroid Collision (http://www.universetoday.com/2010/02/02/hubble-takes-a-look-at-possible-asteroid-collision/)
UT earlier: Asteroid Collision May Have Created Comet-like Object (http://www.universetoday.com/2010/01/19/asteroid-collision-may-have-created-comet-like-object/)
I'd be surprised if BA doesn't have it, but I'm done searching. :)
EATA: Ha. Stumbled to it: BA: Hubble captures picture of asteroid collision! (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/02/02/hubble-captures-picture-of-asteroid-collision/)

hey! where is the proof that it is not a spaceship? [/snark]

What i make of it is that you're trying to show just how silly the boulevard press can get (gizmodo is boulevard press on matters other than gizmos).
Mission accomplished.

It quacks like a duck so it's a comet until is stops acting like one.
Reports like "possible" and "may have" don't sound like conclusions.
Maybe of all the objects, there's one that managed to encase a lump of ice until the shell was cracked.
That's a lot better than an alien invasion.

Four words: Where's . the . nonballistic . motion ???
(It ain't a spaceship until it acts like a spaceship...)

one guy on a board i frequent used this as evidence of the coming of the End of Days- a cross in the sky- and tied it in with the 2012 nonsense.

It's not a cross, it's an X, as in Planet X. Whoda guessed it was so small.

oh, he also brought up Planet X- hence the "cross" shape in the sky.. it's all intertwined in the minds of some people..
