Glossary: Flood Volcanoes
Very runny lavas will flow very far from the vent forming large flat plains that are hundreds of kilometres wide and many hundreds of meters thick.
Flood volcanoes consist of many layers of individual flows, each about 1-50 meters thick. They tend to fill pre-existing depressions, because the runny fluid will flow to the lowest point.
